Privatization consists of the transfer of assets that are owned by the state or by companies with majority state capital to private investors. Privatization can also mean outsourcing to private companies some functions or services such as revenue collection, law enforcement or prison management.
Privatization can also describe changes in ownership of assets that do not involve the public sector. An example would be the acquisition of all shares of a publicly traded company by private investors. The shares will no longer be traded on the stock exchange, and the company becomes private due to private equity.
